Return to Sport – 26 October Update
Basketball Victoria has continued to advocate to Sport and Recreation Victoria (SRV) that indoor sport receives fair and equitable treatment compared to outdoor sport for any COVID-19 vaccination protocols or requirements.
We have recently received information from SRV that the Department of Health hasconfirmed that it is intended that community sport, both indoor and outdoor, is excluded from vaccination requirements if participants are attending solely for that activity.
The exclusion applies to attendees who are necessary to facilitate the community sporting activity, such as participants and volunteers
At this stage the vaccination requirement will apply to facility workers and volunteers if their jobs extend beyond community sport, plus venues where there are food or beverage facilities.
We are still seeking further information and details on the complexities regarding the specific roles that will need to demonstrate their vaccination status, plus requirements surrounding school venues or third party managed venues that have implemented a vaccination mandate.
Please note: We are distributing this information now so you can plan as best as possible before the Health Directions are formalised. However, this information is yet to be fully documented, is not currently in place and will be reflected in a future update to Health Directions later this week, which we will collate and disseminate to the wider basketball community.
While in practical terms, participants, parents/guardians and volunteers – vaccinated and unvaccinated – will be able to attend Basketball Victoria sanctioned activities without having to confirm their vaccination status, there will be other COVID-19 protocols which will be required to be adhered to.
We encourage the community to continue to increase the vaccination rate across the State, so we provide as safe an environment as possible for the community as we return to play.
We will post this information on our social channels at 5pm today to allow clubs and associations to tailor your communications beforehand. We will provide further details as soon as they are available.
Best Regards,
Nick Honey
